Gumbri: White Dove

Celebrating the work of Victorian Indigenous artists, Gumbri: White Dove is a biennial contemporary art prize presented by the City of Darebin in conjunction with the Darebin Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Council (DATSICC).

The name of the exhibition acknowledges Jessie Hunter, a respected Wurundjeri elder who passed away in 2004 whose Wurundjeri name was Gumbri meaning white dove. Showcasing the spectrum of indigenous art and culture that is created in urban and regional environments, the City of Darebin acquires works for its art collection through the Gumbri: White Dove Award ($3,500) and the DATSICC Award forbest emerging artist ($2,000) as well as sponsoring the $500 People’s Choice Award. Previous winners include Turbo Brown, Aunty Bunta Patten, Brian McKinnon, Lorraine Nelson, Gayle Maddigan, Mandi Travis and Uncle Herb Patten.

The Gumbri: White Dove Award is open to Victorian Artists who identify as Indigenous. The DATSICC Award is open to Indigenous artists who live, work or learn in the City of Darebin.
